The European Union formally adopted the latest version of nickel release testing standard (EN12472:2005) in 2006, replacing the previous EN12472:1998 standard. All metal products including ornaments, eyeglasses, and watches must pass this test to be sold in European markets.

As of March 1, 2013, the previous European standard EN 1811:1998 + A1:2008 has been replaced by the new standard EN 1811:2011.
